Fera and their Five-a-Side Surf Team

The never-ending procession of brands jumping on the football bandwagon and formulating shirts could be something cynics might lap up, keen for something to roll their eyes at. We’re not that though. Everyone needs to do football shirts. It’s not just a game for the legacy fans and their curmudgeonly ways. And I say that as someone who is exactly that person.

I just really like football shirts. That’s what it is. I think it’s the simple design brief that goes into them. You choose your badge, your colours/collars and which point in the timeline of football shirt culture you want to dial into. Everything has to make sense, even if overall, your outdoor brand sponsoring a five-a-side team representing a surfing centre seems incongruous. That’s where we at now. Football shirts don’t need to be for playing football in, but if they are, why not make them for a small-sided surf/soccer mashup.

Sennen Surfing Centre is one of the longest-running surf schools in the UK. Obviously it’s down in Cornwall, where the waves are sufficiently large to demand being caught by locals and tourists alike. Their surf coach team are the epitome of a business that serves its community and leaves them feeling better for their interaction. In 2024, that’s what all businesses should surely aspire to be.

Enough pontificating though. What about the actual shirt. Well, feast your peepers on it here. It looks like something AFC Bournemouth would have released for a one-off friendly match with an International Brigade X1, in 1993. Or maybe something you’d find a French second division side wearing in the season they finally went bust, got relegated and were never seen again. You can’t help but imagine these scenarios, but you don’t really need to because the real life one is unlikely enough. Fera are the sponsors on this shirt, and while it’s unclear whether it’ll get a commercial release, it’s a nice enough story for us to share anyway, so there you go.
